Also known as faba, horse or broad beans, tick beans can be fed to cattle as part of a balanced diet. They are a good source of protein with an energy level similar to that of cereal grains. The quality level of tick beans is slightly lower than other sources of feed, due to the low levels of amino acids – methionine and cysteine.
Tick beans are usually cracked or coarsely ground for feeding, but whole beans are satisfactory for mature cattle.
LIMITATIONS
Raw tick bean seeds contain levels of anti-nutritional factors such as protease inhibitors, tannins, favism-inducing factors, hemagglutinins and trypsin inhibitors. These anti-nutritional factors are almost completely inactivated by cooking or germination. Heat treatment will also improve the nutritional quality of tick beans.
